Two רבנים who were marrying off their children got into a dispute concerning the נדוניה. The father of the bride said מן הדין you are required to cede to me and accept my opinion because I am more important than you in this regard, since my name was mentioned in שמים and yours wasn’t.” When asked what his basis was for saying such a thing, he explained: “It’s a גמרא. In מסכת סוטה it states: ארבעים יום קודם יצירת הולד מכריזין בת פלוני לפלוני. Only the daughter’s father is mentioned. That’s me. בן פלוני לפלוני isn’t mentioned. Thus, it’s clear that my name was mentioned in שמים and yours wasn’t.”
