The wife of רבי מנחם-מנדל רובין was an educated woman. One day, she complained to her husband that she heard his שמש praying ברכות השחר out loud and saying ברוך שלא עשני אשה. The רבי told her: “The least of the זכרים is better than the best of the נקבות.” The רבנית was terribly offended. As she was cooking food for שבת, she determined to express her feelings. רבי מנחם-מנדל was a very pious man, who would fast during the week and have soup from a fatty chicken at his שבת סעודה. That שבת the רבנית used a rooster to prepare the soup. When רבי מנחם-מנדל tasted the soup, he grimaced, pushed away the plate, and didn’t eat. “Didn’t you say that the least of the זכרים is better than the best of the נקבות?” his wife asked. The רבי responded: “במה דברים אמורים? קודם מיתה, אבל לאחר מיתה נקבה יפה.”
