Why is that when beating the ערבות on הושענא רבה we say למען דעת כל עמי הארץ? What’s the קשר to דעת כל עמי הארץ? An answer that has been given is that in the בית המקדש, the ערבות were כנגד the עמי הארץ, because they have neither טעם nor ריח. And when we take the הושענות by themselves on הושענא רבה, the עמי הארץ may get the impression that they are the most important. Therefore, we immediately beat them and declare למען דעת כל עמי הארץ.
