The גמרא says that a קמצן, a miser, is עכברא דשכיב אדינרי.  The reason for this is that an עכבר who lies on pieces of bread, even if it is uncomfortable to do so, at least has food to eat.  But an עכבר who lies on gold coins, even if it is uncomfortable to do so, can not enjoy them.  He still has nothing to eat.  Therefore, a קמצן, who has difficulty taking a coin out of his pocket even for his own benefit, is compared to an עכבר who lies on pieces of bread.
