The מאפטא רב answered: The ירושלמי tells us that the יו״ד that משה רבינו added to the name of יהושע was taken from שרי, when she was named שרה. But the יו״ד in שרי does not have a נקודה and the יו״ד in יהושע needed a שווא. Therefore, משה took two נקודות from the סגול under the ב in בן נון and left the בן with a חיריק.
