A Jew and a neighboring גוי always got along until one day the גוי went into the woods, cut down a tree, carved a cross with a figure on it, and placed it in his front yard.  From then on, the relationship became very frosty.  “What have I done to arouse your anger?” the Jew asked.  The גוי responded: “You refuse to show respect to my god.  You don’t remove your cap when you pass him by.”  The Jew replied: “I remember him when he was just a piece of wood.”
