A restaurant owner in Yerushalayim saw that a neighborhood man each day parked himself outside the restaurant with his own meal. Curious, he asked him why he chose to eat his own food right in front of the restaurant. “I enjoy the fine aroma from your kitchen,” the diner replied. Eventually, the owner got annoyed by this and told the neighbor that he would have to pay for the enjoyment of the smell. When he refused, the owner took him before a דין תורה. After hearing both sides, the דיין asked the diner if he had any coins in his pocket. When he responded affirmatively, the דיין told him that his psak is that the diner must jingle the coins. “What?” said the restaurant. “What kind of psak is that?” The רב explained: “He will pay for the smell of your food with the sound of his money.”
