A fight concerning an עירוב was taking place in a small town in Eastern Europe. The מחלוקת was so fierce, that word of it got to the governor of the area. He was familiar with Jewish customs but didn’t know anything about an עירוב. When it was explained to him that there is an איסור of carrying from רשות to רשות and that the עירוב is like a wall which combines the רשויות into one רשות, he said: “If you have this fantasy that a thin metal wire stretched in the air is like a wall of stone, why not fantasize that a wire of air is like a metal wire and be spared this dispute?”
