When R’ מאיר הילדסהיימר, an early leader of אגודת ישראל, was asked: “Why does the אגודה take such strict approaches, always turning to the right? Why not compromise and take the middle road?” רב מאיר answered: “Look at the city streets. People walk on the right side. People walk on the left side. It’s only horses who go down the middle of the road.”
