Boruch had great emunah in the רבונו של עולם. One day, after torrential rains, the river in his town overflowed and the populace quickly evacuated to escape the rising waters. Boruch climbed on the roof of his home and was there for several hours when a man with a row boat came along and told him to get in. “No, thank you,” Boruch said. “השם will take care of me.” The water kept rising. Soon, a motor boat appeared and Boruch was told to get in. “No, thank you,” he said. “השם will take care of me.” The water kept rising. A helicopter came along, dropped a ladder and told Boruch to climb up. “No, thank you,” he said. “השם will take care of me.” A short while later, the surge of the water was so strong that Boruch was swept from the roof and drowned. When Boruch got to Heaven, he complained “השם promised He would look after me. What happened?” “Well,” he was told, “השם sent two boats and a helicopter for you. What else did you want?”
