Late one חנוכה night, as a group of men were playing cards, the סאטמאר רבי was asked why is it that when a person sits down with a גמרא to learn, sleep begins to overcome him and he needs to make extra effort to stay awake; but when playing cards, a person can keep going all night without feeling drowsy at all?  The רבי answered: “The נשמה goes up to heaven every night to give דין וחשבון and therefore, when it does good, it rushes heavenward to report on the מצוות it has done.  Thus, when a person sits down to learn, he instantly becomes drowsy because his נשמה is rushing to report the מצוה.  However, when he sits down to play cards, the נשמה is in no rush to report it. That is why the card player has no trouble staying up all night.”
