In the early days of the יישוב in ארץ ישראל, the דעתיים wanted ירושלים to be the spiritual, political, and economic center. The חילונים insisted that the political and economic center be in Tel Aviv/יפו. The דעתיים conceded only that since the days of יונה, those fleeing from השם went to יפו.
