R’ ברוך מרדכי ליפשיץ was told that a member of the community had just died of hunger.  “How could that be?” he asked.  “He could have come to me or someone else, even a גוי, to ask for bread and water.  Anyone would have given him at least that.”  The רבי was told that the man had once been a prominent member of the קהילה and was too proud to ask for bread.  “If so,” the רבי said, “why do you say he died of hunger?   He didn’t die of hunger. He died of גאווה.”
