Some men once went to ר׳ עקיבא איגר to ask that he remove to town’s שוחט because he liked to drink and often became drunk. The רב replied that that he was sympathetic to their request. “In the חד גדיא” he said, “we read ואתא המלאך המות ושחט לשוחט דשחת לתורא. Why does the שוחט deserve this punishment? After all, slaughtering is his task. The answer is that this occurs after he has drunk four כוסות and a שוחט who performs שחיטה after all that drinking is not fit to continue to slaughter.”
