A תלמיד חכם once observed: “We should be grateful to the מצרים; without them we wouldn’t have the beautiful holiday of פסח.  Indeed, the רבונו של עולם rewarded them for this when they drowned in the ים סוף.  As you know, when a Jew is on his deathbed, he asks for three things: that his נשמה should go out in the presence of Jews; that he be purified with water; and that צדקה be given in his name.  The מצרים received all this בכפל כפלים:  their נשמות went out in the presence of ששים ריבוא מישראל; they were purified in the waters of the ים; and their money was given to בני ישראל.”
