In דברים טז, ג, the תרגום translates לחם עוני as לחם עניים חסרי מזון. In today’s דף, the גמרא is דורש it as bread שעונים עליו הרבה. That is to say that people do all kind of things for money and they have many excuses to explain away the things they do to put bread on the table.
