Yeshiva boys were learning פרק כל שעה in מסכת פסחים when they got toואלו ירקות שאדם יוצא בהן ידי חובתו בפסח – בחזרת, בתמכא.  One of the boys asked: “רבי, what is תמכא?”  The רבי responded:  “Have you forgotten that there is רש״י in the world?”  The student looked at רש״י and saw that it saysמפרש בגמרא.  When they reached the portion of the גמרא that has the פירוש of רבה בר בר-חנה, that תמכא-תמכתא, the boy again asked the רבי what is תמכתא?  Again, the רבי responded:  “Have you forgotten that there is רש״י in the world?”  The student looked at רש״י and saw that it says תמכתא – מרובי״א בלע״ז.   Of course, the boy asked what is מרובי״א?  “Do I look like a Frenchman to you?” the רבי responded.  “How am I supposed to know what מרובי״א means?”
