קידושין ב

A תלמיד חכם was having difficulty understanding the משנה which says התקדשי לי על מנת שאני עשיר ונמצא עני, עני ונמצא עשיר – אינה מקודשת. “I can understand that a woman who thought she was marrying a rich man is not happy when she finds out that he is poor. But I can’t understand why a woman would not be happy if the poor man she thought she was marrying turned out to be rich.” His רבי explained to him: “You see the man in the corner dressed in rags; he is in fact very wealthy but also so miserly that he won’t even spend on the basics for himself. A woman who marries such an עני only to later learn that he is really עשיר, would be very unhappy indeed.”
