R’ חיים of Sanz had a שמש who had faithfully served him for many years. When the רבי married his fourth wife, the שמש, not willing to put up with her demands, approached the רבי and asked to be relieved from his position. When the surprised רבי asked why, the learned שמש responded: “חז״ל say that if an עבד has a wife and children, and his master does not have a wife and children, אינו נרצה. This raises the obvious question ‘Why’? The answer is that the תורה had pity on the עבד of an unmarried master. It didn’t require שיירצה lest his master takes a wife who the עבד can not tolerate.”
