R’ יונתן אייבשיץ once was asked by a גוי: “You Jews have the שבת and יום טוב meals at night before the day because you hold that the night precedes the day.  But why do you change this custom when it comes to פורים and have the feast during the day itself as the evening of the holiday approaches?”  רבי יונתן answered: “Just as you ask about our custom, I will ask about your custom.  Christians have their Sunday and holiday meals during the day because you hold that the day precedes the night.  But why do you change this custom when it comes to the x-mas meal and have the feast the night before the day?   It seems to me that on x-mas you follow our custom because a Jew played a starring role and on פורים we follow your custom because a גוי played a starring role.”
