A שדכן suggested a great שידוך for the daughter of a prominent member of the קהילה. The father of the girl turned him down, however, explaining that his daughter was still too young. The שדכן replied: “קידושין is like קידוש לבנה. Why are we מקדש לבנה in the beginning of the month while it’s still קטנה? Wouldn’t it be more proper to wait until later in the month, when it’s grown and complete? The reason is because when the moon has grown and has spent night after night outside, it’s too late.”
