A chasidic רב had a son who was fond of telling jokes. This annoyed the רב, who made his son promise not to tell jokes for a year. That שבת, as the רב was saying his extremely long שמונה עשרה, he heard laughter from the back of the shul and knew that his son was back at it again. “You promised me that you wouldn’t tell jokes for a year,” the father complained to his son. “Yes,” the son admitted, “but your שמונה עשרה took a year and a day.״
