Today’s דף says: גדולה הכנסת אורחים יותר מקבלת פני שכינה.  That’s a pretty remarkable statement. If קבלת פני שכינה isn’t greater, it should at least be equal to הכנסת אורחים.   But as סוטה יז teaches: איש ואשה כשיש שלום ביניהם שכינה שרויה ביניהם.  At times, however, a wife is not prepared to have company and this could lead to an argument between the couple, causing the שכינה to depart.  Therefore, if הכנסת אורחים and קבלת פני שכינה were equal, the husband would think perhaps it’s better that I maintain שלום בית and don’t invite a guest, so that the שכינה remain with us.  To prevent this from occurring, חז״ל said that the מצוה of הכנסת אורחים is even greater than קבלת פני שכינה.
