A רב who was מהדר במצות הכנסת אורחים, would bring poor people to his home for meals. His wife, however, was a stingy person and did not share his values. The רב once invited a group of four עניים for the פורים סעודה and had a separate table set up for them. When the meal was served, the עניים saw that the רבנית served her husband and the other guests a quarter of a chicken for each one, but for them, the עניים, she served a quarter of a chicken for the four of them to share. One of them rose from his seat and exclaimed: “רבותי, הבה נתפלל מנחה.” Surprised, the בעל הבית said: “What are you talking about? We haven’t even eaten yet and it’s only a quarter to one.” The עני responded with a smile: “At our table it’s a quarter to four.” The host got the hint.
