The מלבי״ם was once asked: “מסכת שבת states בעוון נדרים אשתו של אדם מתה. Yet, I’m married to a wicked and cursed woman whom I can no longer live with. I’m embarrassed to say it, but I’ve actually made נדרים which I didn’t keep, hoping that she would die. But she continues to live. How can that be?” The מלבי״ם responded: “In מסכת ברכות the גמרא says:במערבה כשהיה אדם נושא אשה, היו שואלים אותו ׳מצא׳ או ׳מוצא׳, היינו הטובה היא אם רע. Now, the difference between the two words is in the punctuation. The מ in מצא has the נקודה under it, whereas in מוצא the נקודה is on top. This is significant because when חז״ל said that a woman dies from the sin of נדרים, they learnt it from the פסוק in משלי, which says יקח משכבך מתחתיך׳’ and teaches that אין לוקחים משכבו של אדם אלא ׳מתחתיו׳, when the נקודה is under the word, namely when the husband מצא, found, a woman who is good. However, when it’s מוצא because the woman is bad, like in your case, she’s going to be staying with you for a long time.”
