שבת-לז

On ערב שבת, as his mother was cleaning the house, the young יהונתן איבשיץ stole into the kitchen and helped himself to a large portion of fish that his mother had cooked for שבת.  When his father became aware of it, he said to his son “How can you take the food without permission?”  יהונתן answered: “אבא it’s a מצווה מפורשת on ערב שבת to taste from the foods prepared for שבת, as we say in the תפילה: טועמיה חיים זכו.”  His father responded: “The מצוה is only to taste, not to take such a large portion.”   Undeterred, his son said: “But the פסוק continues and expressly says: טועמיה חיים זכו – וגם האוהבים דבריה גדולה בחרו.״
