When a colleague of רבי ישראל סלנטר saw him praise a student for his diligence in studying דברי מוסר, he said to the רב: “If the תלמיד wouldn’t spend all his time with דברי מוסר, he could be a גדול בתורה.” The רבי responded: “The גמרא tells us מי שיש לפניו גלוסקאות, אחת קטנה ושלימה ואחת גדולה ובצועה, מברך על הקטנה השלימה, ולא על הגדולה הבצועה. This teaches that השלם is superior to הגדול.”
