When a חסיד came to his רב one שבת, the רב noticed that the חסיד was wearing his גרטל high up above his belly. The צדיק explained to him that the גרטל separates the spiritual upper body from the physical lower body and accordingly the proper way to wear it is low down so that the spiritual portion be greater. A person who is גס does the reverse, wearing his גרטל high up to increase the physical גוף. “An example of this,” he said, “is the custom of the Arabs to wear the גרטל above the head in the khaffia.”
