One שבת, a man noticed that חיים נחמן ביאליק, the Israeli author, was speaking Yiddish.  “I’m surprised,” said the man.  “You’re known as the famous Hebrew writer.  Why are you speaking Yiddish?”  ביאליק answered: “אידיש רעדט זיך אליין – Yiddish speaks on its own.  But speaking Hebrew is a מלאכה and מלאכה אסורה בשבת.”
