One day, the פריץ of a town got the crazy idea of teaching his dog to speak.  Knowing that the Jews are smart, he ordered Asher, one of the brightest Jews, to teach his dog to speak or he would make life miserable for him.  Asher agreed to do the impossible, but told the פריץ that it would take five years and the cost would be 5,000 ruble per year.  When he went home with the money in his satchel and told his wife the task he had undertaken, she screamed: “Are you nuts?  You can’t teach a dog to speak.  The פריץ will kill us!”  But Asher was calm.  He said: “Five years is a long time.  Either the dog will die or the פריץ will die or I will die.”
