R’ אברהם אבלי גומבינר was the author of מגן אברהם, a ספר which was written in shorthand and was difficult to understand without the פירוש called מחצית השקל, which annotated the ספר. One of the sons of רבי אברהם unfortunately did not have his brilliance but compensated for it by citing his יחוס at every opportunity. When he was approached for צדקה, however, he found it difficult to reach into his pocket. Once, when a collector came to ask him for a נדבה, he responded by telling him of his great יחוס. The collector said “What good is the מגן אברהם without the מחצית השקל?”
