On a Friday night, after the תפילה, the רב of Frankfurt, רבי הירש הורביץ, asked one of the wealthy members of his קהילה to invite a visiting תלמיד חכם to his home for the סעודה. The עשיר declined, saying that he fulfills his charitable obligations with all the קופות צדקה that he has at home. The רב responded that his conduct is the opposite of what the חכמים spelled out in מסכת שבת, where the משנה says: מפנין אפילו ארבע וחמש קופות…מפני האורחים. “However,” the רב said, “you wantלפנות מן הבית אורח, שהוא גם תלמיד חכם, מפני כמה קופות.”
