The רמב״ם, as is well known, was the king’s doctor in מצרים. Other doctors who were jealous of the honor bestowed on the רמב״ם sought to embarrass him stated before the king that an expert physician could bring sight even to a person who was blind from birth. The רמב״ם, however, disputed them and held that sight could only be restored in people who had originally been able to see. To prove their point, they came to the palace with a man who claimed to have been born blind. After dabbing his eyes with a potion, they triumphantly showed that they were right, the man could see. The רמב״ם said just a moment. He picked up a cloth and asked the healed man what it was. “It’s a red cloth,” he answered. The king and the רמב״ם shared a smile.
