The author of הפלא on Halacha, רבי פנחס הלוי הורוביץ, once refused to count a certain Jew as the tenth man for a minyan. Upset and angry, the man said to ר׳ פנחס: “But רבי, wasn’t the חלבנה, which had a foul smell, nevertheless included as part of the סימני הקטורת?” “Yes,” he said. “That’s why it had 11 סממנים not ten.”
