A חסיד who was suffering from depression went to spend שבת with רבי שמחה בונם but, due to unforeseen circumstances, was delayed until מוצאי שבת. He said that he had left home with plenty of time to spare and didn’t understand how this could happen to him. The רבי explained that שבת is very welcoming to guests. If ראש חודש falls on a שבת, it is מוותר on its מפטיר and מוסף. If יום טוב falls on a שבת, it is מוותר on its תפילה and פרשת השבוע. If יום כיפור falls on a שבת, it is מוותר on שלוש סעודות and sits with her in תענית. But this is not done when תשעה באב, which is a day of sadness, comes on שבת. In that case, שבת is not מוותרת and pushes off תשעה באב until the following day. Why? Because שבת is a time of joy and a guest who is in depression would spoil that happiness. He’s welcome to come במוצאי שבת.
