A חסיד once traveled to see his רבי and took along his friend, a מתנגד, so that he could see and experience the holiness of the רבי. When they left, the מתנגד was full of fervor and excitement. “What did you see?” the חסיד asked. “I saw the רבי as he was being מתפלל,” the מתנגד answered. “It seemed to me that I was observing the כהן גדול as he was doing the עבודה in the בית המקדש.” The חסיד went back to see the רבי and said “I’ve been coming for years to see the רבי and I haven’t been זוכה to see what my friend the מתנגד saw in his first visit.” The רבי responded: “A מתנגד has to see with his own eyes. For a חסיד, it’s enough that he believes.”
