It was said about a certain person that he afflicted himself with all kinds of afflictions and fasted each week from שבת to שבת. A רב, who was opposed to such afflictions, commented: “The גמרא in שבת says: יודע הקדוש-ברוך-הוא בכלב שמזונתיו מועטים, לפיכך שוהה אכילתו במעיו שלושה ימים. So just imagine the מדרגה of this man whose food remains in his intestines for six straight days.”
