R’ פנחס of Frankfurt, the בעל הפלאה, lived very simply and frugally at home. Went he went out, however, he dressed in the finest clothes and lodged in expensive hotels. When asked to explain, he said: “As you know, שבת פרשת פנחס falls each year בין המצרים, between שבעה עשר בתמוז and תשעה באב. We also read פרשת פנחס as מפטיר של חגים ומועדים. This teaches that when פנחס is in his place he’s בין המצרים, but when he’s out he is מפטיר של חג, as befitting the Chief Rabbi of Frankfurt.”
