When רבי אייזל חריף was told that a certain supposed תלמיד חכם was writing תשובות בהלכה in which he sought להתיר איסורים, he said: “We learn in מסכת ברכות, that אם ראית תלמיד חכם שעבר עבירה בלילה אל תהרהר אחריו ביום – שודאי עשה תשובה. That is to say that during the night he certainly came up with a תשובה to justify his עבירה.”
