An עם הארץ who became wealthy bought himself a seat at the מזרח wall of the בית הכנסת right next to the רב. One day, turning to the רב, he asked: “How is it that in קריאת שמע we say ונתתי עשב בשדך? Why is עשו in the שמע?” Smiling, the רב replied: “It’s simple. He was very wealthy and so he bought a spot in קריאת שמע.”
