שבת-ז

A Polish רב and פוסק who lived almost 500 years ago, ר׳ יעקב בר׳ יוסף פולאק, went to the home of one of his מתפללים one שבת afternoon.  When no one answered his knocks on the door or his shouts to be let in, he forgot himself and knocked with the clanger – something which is אסור on שבת.   When the homeowner opened the door, he asked ר׳ יעקב how he permitted himself to knock with the clanger.  The רב explained that he did it without thinking.  He added: הקול קול יעקב והידים ידי עשו.
