The דברי חיים מצאנז once said to a חסיד who was at his שבת table but wasn’t eating, “Why is it that in the שלום עליכם we say צאתכם לשלום? Let the מלאכים stay. The answer is because the מלאכים don’t eat and we’re not comfortable having them look at us while we eat. Therefore, we tell them צאתכם לשלום.”
