Today’s דף tells us כל דיבור ודיבור שיצא מפי הקדוש ברוך הוא חזרו ישראל לאחוריהם י״ב מיל והיו מלאכי השרת מדדין אותן. Why were the מלאכי השרת pushing them back? Apparently, it was because having gone back 12 מיל, they were outside the תחום of שבת and the בני ישראל couldn’t return on their own.
