A תלמיד חכם was asked:  “Why did חז״ל say ׳חכם שמת – הכול קרוביו?’.”  “We know,” he responded, “that, generally, חכמים are poor.  As it’s stated: ‘לא לחכמים לחם.”  And therefore, while a חכם is alive, people stay away from him so as not to have to help to support him.  But once he dies, people want to bask in his honor and boast that they were related.
