A מתנגד once asked a חסיד why חסידים drink liquor both in celebration and in mourning.   “If the liquor is משמח את הלב, it shouldn’t be drunk at a time of אבלות,” he said, “and if it causes sadness, it shouldn’t be drunk at a time of שמחה.”  The חסיד responded: “The whole purpose of drinking is the ברכה that we make.  As חז״ל have said: ‘חייב אדם לברך על הרעה כשם שהוא מברך על הטובה.'”  “But,” replied the מתנגד, “If that’s the purpose, why make the ברכה on liquor?  The same ברכה could be made on water.”  “Think about it,” the חסיד said, “If a Jew has such a fine מידה that he makes a ברכה על הרעה כשם שהוא מברך על הטובה, doesn’t he deserve a glass of wine or a shot of liquor?”
