A Jew went to the רב of his town with a question:  Is it מותר to slaughter לכבוד יום טוב a hen that has just given birth to chicks?  The רב said it’s מותר, but the questioner remained troubled.  “רבי,” he said, “צער בעלי-חיים is דאורייתא and the chicks are small and still need their mother.”  The רב thought about it and said באמת, the matter requires further analysis.  He asked the questioner to return the next day and perhaps in the interim יעזור לי המקום.  The following day, the questioner returned with a sad expression on his face.  He told the רב that an animal dug into the chicken coop at night and killed the mother and her young.  The face of the רב brightened.  “It’s as I said,” the רב exclaimed.  “Perhaps in the interim, יעזור לי המקום.”
