R’  וולבלה of Zbarazh was exceptionally considerate of both his fellow human beings and of animals, being especially sensitive to צער בעלי חיים.  Once, while traveling in a wagon, the רבי cried out to the driver to stop hurting the horses.  “Why are you whipping them?” he asked.  The driver answered:  “I’m not whipping them.  I’m just keeping the flies off of them.”  ר׳ וולבלה quickly pulled out a handkerchief and implored the driver: “In that case, please don’t do it with a whip, use this handkerchief.”
