When a member of the קהילה questioned the abilities of his רב, he was told that he was being unfair; there is a great difference between the ראשונים and the אחרונים.  “In the days of משה רבינו,” the man said, “the אבות heard the words of אלוקים and משה spoke with Him פנים על פנים.  In the days of the נביאים, the words of השם we’re heard in a vision, בחזון.  And in the days of the גמרא, the קול ceased but the בת קול continued.  Now, however, in our days, there is no קול and no חזון.  Our רבנים are not on the level of the אבות, the נביאים or the תנאים.  In fact, it’s מפורש said: רב לכם, לא אוסיף דבר אליכם.”
