Rebbi נחום בר מסאדאגורה would call his wife’s father חותני, my father-in-law, rather than דודי, my uncle, even though he was רבי נחום father’s brother.  When asked why, he explained: “ארבעים יום קודם יצירת הוולד בת קול יוצאת ואומרת בת פלוני לפלוני.  Therefore, my wife’s father was חותני before he was דודי.”
