“The שבת performs הכנסת אורחים in an exceptional manner,” said ר׳ שמחה בונים. “When ראש חדש falls on שבת, it cedes תפילת מוסף to it. When יום טוב falls on שבת, it’s מוותר all the תפילות to it. When יום כיפור falls on שבת, it is מוותר even the סעודות. All of this is for guests who bring joy. But for a guest that brings only sadness, namely תשעה באב, the שבת says I have nothing in common with you; I’m not going to step aside for you.”
